In this study, the student considers how research questions critkcal developed and refined to enable the researcher to address the key issues proposed by the research within the limits that time and resources impose.

Extended Investigation in the VCE
Students devise a research question that requires a detailed inquiry and that is of significance. There are no Units 1 and 2 in this study. Tl;dr – make sure the timetable is detailed and that you stick to it. They are also genuinely interested in their topics which makes them want to develop the answers for their thesis.

Extended Investigation Unit 3: And the negative ones? Designing an Extended Investigation Unit 4: As students analyse and evaluate the differences between opinion, belief, anecdote, evidence and substantiated views, they come to understand the value of research and the contribution it can make to a deeper understanding of a question or problem. Class time is often spent either doing “independent research” or being taught in the beginning concepts such as Ethical Research Methods, and How to Analyse Bias in Resources etc.
They apply the skills of critical thinking and make judgments about comparative strengths and weaknesses in argument and evidence. To achieve this outcome the student will draw on key knowledge and key skills outlined in Area of Study 1.

They detail the types of evidence explored in their research to date, articulate the central issue of their investigation and make predictions about the outcomes of their investigation. School-assessed Coursework for Unit 3 will contribute 30 per cent. Students practise critical thinking through examination of a range of materials, and evaluate evidence and argument within these examples.
To achieve this outcome the student will draw on key knowledge and key skills outlined in Area of Study 3. Assessment The award of satisfactory completion for a unit is based on a decision that the student has demonstrated achievement of the set of outcomes specified for the unit.
Students undertake initial research and document their progress in their Extended Investigation Journal. The other student had compiled all of her resources with summaries by that point.

You need to work consistently to achieve in this subject, or you will end up submitting a hastily put together and sub-par research ‘thesis’ written the night before it is due. Students complete practical exercises in the development of critical thinking skills and include them in their Extended Critixal Journal.

Make sure the question is not too controversial or too boring – remember that you have to defend this as your external assessment in front of people who have their own beliefs. They learn to apply the conventions of academic report writing, including citations and bibliographic referencing of sources.
If you have a spare subject slot, and think that you can find something you’re passionate about to research, and build up your critical thinking skills to defend those findings – then this is the subject for you. Some teachers provided a template timeline to the class, others did not. On completion of this unit the student should be able to design and justify a research question. thiking
